This ethical tourism workshop will provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices that promote responsible and sustainable travel. The workshop follows a step-by-step approach: understanding tourism leads to an exploration of over-tourism, which then introduces ethical tourism, culminating in sustainable tourism.
Through discussions, listening comprehension, vocabulary building, functional language, and reading activities, learners will not only enhance their understanding of different types of tourism but also improve their functional language skills within and beyond the tourism industry.
• Understanding ethical principles: Learners will be able to articulate core principles of ethical tourism, including respect for cultures, environmental sustainability, and social accountability.
• Cultural sensitivity: Learners will develop an awareness of cultural differences and learn how to engage respectfully with local communities, understanding the importance of cultural heritage and practices.
• Sustainable practices: Learners will be able to identify and evaluate sustainable tourism practices, including eco-friendly accommodations and minimizing carbon footprints.
• Personal reflection: Learners will reflect on their own travel experiences and values, considering how they can contribute to ethical tourism in future travels.
• Vocabulary building: Learners will define and use key vocabulary related to ethical tourism.
• Contextual usage: Learners will demonstrate the ability to use new vocabulary in context to discuss ethical tourism practices and principles.
• Effective communication: Learners will use functional language to make inquiries, give recommendations, and express opinions about ethical tourism practices.
• Active listening skills: Learners will develop active listening skills by engaging with audio materials such as podcasts, interviews, and travel documentaries.
This workshop is intended for individuals interested in tourism and those seeking a deeper understanding of the impact of various forms of tourism today. It may also be particularly relevant to learners affected by (over)tourism in Japan, helping them better articulate their views on the subject.
