Course Description

This workshop offers both lovers of craft beer and those new to the world of craft beer an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge related to the history of craft beer in different parts of the world (including Japan), brewing methods, the variety of styles of beer. As with most of the culinary world, tasting is understanding, so the course will also cover tasting techniques while sampling a wide range of brewing styles from different regions. The workshop will cover the fundamentals of how different ingredients and techniques lead to different outcomes in taste, consistency and alcohol percentage. By the end of the day you should be able to identify the main styles of craft beer and their characteristic tasting notes, main producing regions, brewing stages, and some interesting historical and cultural notes.

Instructor Biography

Sam is a long-time resident of Japan who loves both the science behind and consumption of beer. He originally came over to attend a Japanese university and has held various positions in different fields since graduating. He currently has been working at Baird Beer for over 5 years and learned much about this beloved beverage in this time. In his private time he likes to watch movies, play games, and listen to music. His personal Rubiks Cube record is 1 minute and 20 seconds. He speaks English and Japanese and is currently working on Korean.
